MY FIRST 30 DAYS ON EBAY
Over $3,000 In Sales

Rob Dahlager
The Attack Zone, LLC
eBay ID: attackzone

As a hockey coach, player and parent, I found frustration in finding a good selection of hockey equipment at reasonable prices for myself and my son.  I heard the same from several other hockey parents.  The local shops had okay prices, but not a lot of inventory.  The big online guys had good prices, but they could’t spend time helping me choose and I often paid more in shipping returns than I did buying the product.  After Terry Gehrke and I sat down to discuss the opportunity of an eBay business, I knew what I wanted to do – sell hockey equipment with online prices and in store type of service.

I took a week vacation from work the week after Christmas and made a commitment to get the store up and running and learn what I needed to know about running an online business and getting things going on eBay.  Terry was intricate and patient with me as I was racing all over the board to have things running within 5 days.  I did not have a ton of time once I returned to my regular job, so I wanted the store, suppliers, banks and back office set up by the end of that first weekend.  My biggest fears in getting started?  Signing up with the right suppliers, getting my listings noticed and keeping cash outflow to the absolute minimum.  Looking back, there were some things done in haste that caused some re-work, but overall, it was very focused time that was well spent.

Sitting at the end of my first 30 days on January 31, 2009, I can say that I am proud of what was accomplished.  Sales were over 3 times what I had planned for the first month.  I have three solid suppliers with product lines broader than I can even list in my store efficiently.  I have had my first repeat customer.  And, some of the things Terry told me 28 days ago are finally sinking in.  Here are some other quick reflections to the first month success:

1. Optimization is key If you don’t know about search optimization, you need to learn about it.  It will get your listings and your store ranked higher in eBay and on the Internet.  Planning your listing optimization up front will keep you from significant re-work as you find things to tweak.

2. Impatience is deadly
-- Once I had suppliers, I listed a few hundred items in store inventory.  I was so sure that I could get sales quickly, that I did multiple very short term auctions with several of the listing features, creating very, very expensive listings.  I later found out that for my products, my successful competitors listed no shorter than 7 days.  That was a lesson that cost me quadruple my expected eBay fees and significantly cut my profitability for the month.

3. Plan your work and work your plan
– I had targets set for my first 9 months of business.  Sales, costs of goods, selling expenses, back office and target margins.  I also planned how I would move from an eBay only model to an online model that incorporated several other selling channels.  I did not hit the plan perfectly the first 30 days, but it helped to keep me focused on what I need to do in the first 6 months.

4. Listen to your advisers
– I chose to work with Terry to guide me in building a successful eBay business after we talked on the phone and met face to face.  I knew I needed some guidance to navigate the eBay web and wanted someone who could at least keep me out of trouble.  My MBA mind and business experience background did not always agree with Terry, but the eBay experience since then has shown he knows how to hit the target, if I would just let my ego get out of the way.  The decisions I made that Terry recommended against turned out being the most costly for my business.  Go figure!

So, the stories are true.  If you have enough passion and are willing to listen, you can be successful online.  30 days does not a career make, but it sure has been a great start.  With patience, a solid plan and good advisers, I am targeting over $100,000 in sales for the first year.  Good luck in your new venture … May it bring you happiness and success!

Internet Sales Continue To Rise Despite The Recession

Online sales will likely continue to climb in 2009 this is according to projections from Forrester research.  Online retail sales in the US are expected to rise to $156 billion this year this is an 11% increase.  This will mark a small slowdown from the previous growth of 13% in 2008.  Sucharita Mulpuru an analyst for Forrester research said “the majority of the 2009 growth in online spending will come at the expense of physical retail stores” she expects more consumer dollars to be spent online because it's easier for people to comparison shop and find what they're looking for.  The Forrester view agrees with predictions from other retail research and marketing firms.

A large group of consumers known as recession shoppers indicated in a recent study that they will do more shopping online this year if their financial situation worsens they represent 26% of the 800 consumers surveyed in a study conducted by Penn, Schoen, & Berland Associates, a market research and consulting firm.  The study was sponsored by Link Share Corp.

The survey suggests that both frequent online shoppers and that newly dubbed recession shoppers are receptive to promotions more than two thirds of recession shoppers and 79% of weekly Web shoppers said they had purchased something online they would not have otherwise because of a coupon or discount.  “They see online purchasing as part of the solution to the challenges they face right now” said Mark Kirschner, CMO at link Share.

Many companies have seen stronger activity in their online sales over the traditional sales venues.  In a recent Forrester research survey of e-business executives, 38% of our panelists say their online division’s budget will increase in 2009 over 2008 and that their online channel within their companies continues to increase.
